The concept of person-centred planning is that the different agencies, friends and family involved in a young person’s life should focus on the needs of that person, listen to what they want and aspire to, and work together to make this happen. Sadly, my experience suggests that this rarely happens, and one of the reasons is that our systems are set up in a way that makes it exceedingly difficult even for dedicated, skilled and enthusiastic professionals to work together!

It is important that any school also has strong relationships within the wider community, and knows what opportunities are available. For some young people, success may not lie in traditional routes of college or work, and professionals supporting young autistic people into adulthood need to think very creatively, utilizing the young person’s interests, talents, and passions to find occupations that will engage them. In some cases, exploring less traditional areas can be beneficial. Sometimes the creative industries can value difference and appreciate the talents of autistic young people.
